DERBY SUPER LABS
Aug
2024

The University of Derbyshire’s cutting-edge Derby Super Labs is undergoing a significant upgrade. The project is a collaboration between the Chartered Architects and the contractors.

A key feature of this renovation is the installation of Jansen Janisol EI60 steel frames and high-performance glazing. Jansen Janisol EI60 steel frames, integrating EI60 25mm PROBEL EG/88mm Chromatech spacer with 6mm toughened SKN175 glass, were specified. This combination ensures robust fire resistance and optimal energy efficiency.

Tasked with replacing the original non-fire-rated aluminium external screens with EI60 steel screens and specialised glazing. This new system includes coated toughened glass on the building’s exterior, designed to achieve a low U-value and superior solar control. These enhancements are crucial for the lab’s function as a high-spec facility where scientists conduct skin cell research.

To maintain an airtight and clean environment, critical for minimising outside pollution, the installed frames will be sealed internally with an EPDM liner. This step is vital for the laboratory’s operations, ensuring the highest cleanliness and air quality standards.

Project Specifications:

103 EI60 DGU units (206 pieces of glass) covering 85.11 square meters, were supplied by FGUK and System 3 (the unit manufacturer) and small scaffold towers will be used to install high-level glass. The project is scheduled to take approximately 17.5 days.

The project, expected to be completed by early 2025, holds potential for further installations on the upper floors, securing additional orders and expanding the scope of the current renovation.

This ambitious upgrade modernises the Derby Super Labs and sets a new standard for laboratory environments, emphasising safety, efficiency, and environmental control.
